God has been speaking to you all along — through light, water, marriage, and even the bread on your table. Types and shadows are His fingerprints woven through Scripture and creation, each one a personal invitation to deeper intimacy with Him. Open your eyes and the ordinary world becomes a conversation.
The Context
In Part 7 of the "Hearing the Voice of God" series, Pastors Tim and Meagan Howe build on last week's foundational message about God's love, anchored in the key series scripture — John 10:27. With the bedrock of God's love firmly established, this installment takes a significant step forward: exploring how God communicates through types, shadows, and pictures hidden in plain sight throughout the Bible, in creation, and in the everyday rhythms of life. The goal is not just occasional moments of hearing God, but developing eyes — and a heart — that recognize His voice everywhere.
The Core Message
From the opening verses of Genesis through the intricate laws and festivals of the Old Testament, God was always painting a picture of Jesus Christ. Colossians 2:16-17 confirms it plainly — the dietary laws, festivals, new moons, and Sabbaths were all shadows whose substance belongs to Christ. Hebrews 8 adds that even the earthly tabernacle was a hand-crafted copy of the heavenly reality, built according to the very pattern God showed Moses on the mountain. These were not arbitrary religious rules imposed on Israel. They were a love language — God's elaborate, deeply intentional communication designed to lead His people straight to the One who would fulfill every promise.
What makes this truth even more remarkable is that God's communication through types and shadows did not end with the Old Testament. Creation itself pulses with His voice — the vine and its branches, the water we drink each day, the first rays of light breaking through darkness, the covenant of marriage, the waters of baptism, the broken bread of the Lord's Supper. Romans 1:18-20 makes clear that God has revealed Himself to every person through the things He has made. And when the Holy Spirit opens your eyes to one of these pictures in a specific moment, that revelation is not generic — it is personal. It is God Himself reaching toward you, inviting you to know Him more deeply.
The Application
- Build on Bedrock: Root your spiritual life not in religious habit or tradition alone, but all the way down to the firm foundation of God's personal love for you — the kind of foundation that holds when everything around you begins to shift.
- Ask God to Search You: Following the invitation of Psalm 139, give God permission to reveal what's truly in your heart — areas of pain, insecurity, or unbelief — so He can bring healing and expand your capacity to receive His love.
- Look for the Pictures: As you read Scripture, especially through the Old Testament, ask the Holy Spirit to show you the types and shadows pointing to Christ. The more you look with intentional eyes, the more you will find — the Bible is saturated with them.
- Personalize God's Creation: When you encounter beauty in the created world — a drink of water, a branch on a vine, light breaking through clouds — pause and receive it as a personal moment. That flash of recognition is not coincidence; it is God speaking to you specifically.
- Receive the Sacraments Intentionally: Approach baptism and the Lord's Supper with fresh, expectant eyes, recognizing them as rich and living pictures — your death, burial, and resurrection with Christ, and His broken body and shed blood that make you completely whole.
- Hold Onto Your Vision: If God has given you a personal picture or calling — something He has shown you about your future — return to it in prayer regularly. Personal visions are a form of His voice and are meant to guide and sustain you over a lifetime.
