You were not rescued from darkness by accident — you were carried out with a purpose. In Christ, the chains are broken, the debt is canceled, and you've been brought into a kingdom with a new identity, a new inheritance, and a new reason to live. Discover what it means to walk worthy of the King who rescued you.
The Context
In Part 2 of the Christ in You series, Pastor Tim Howe continues through Colossians 1, focusing on verses 9–14. Paul's well-known prayer for the Colossian church opens this passage — a prayer not for better circumstances, but for deeper knowing — and it leads directly into one of the most compact summaries of the gospel in all of Scripture: rescued from the dominion of darkness, transferred into the kingdom of the beloved Son.
The Core Message
The foundation of the Christian life is not striving — it is knowing. Paul's prayer reveals that the worthy walk, the fruitful life, and the endurance that sustains us all flow from being filled with the knowledge of God's will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding. Right believing comes before right living, and the power to live it is not our own: we are strengthened with all power according to His glorious might, not ours.
The rescue described in Colossians 1:13–14 is not simply a release — it is a transfer. God did not free us from slavery only to leave us on our own; He brought us into the kingdom of His beloved Son, canceled our debt at the cross, disarmed the powers that held us captive, and welcomed us in as sons and heirs. Redemption ends in adoption. The same God who said "Let light shine out of darkness" has made His light shine in our hearts — and that light changes everything about how we live.
The Application
-
Start with Knowing: Before reaching for the doing, press into relationship with God. The worthy walk flows from being filled with the knowledge of His will — not from willpower or self-effort.
-
Draw on His Strength: The power for daily life does not come from your own effort or ability. You are strengthened with all power according to His glorious might — lean on that, not your own reserves.
-
Walk from Your Identity: You are light in the Lord — not darkness with a little light mixed in. Let your choices, your entertainment, and your daily conduct reflect who you actually are in the kingdom.
-
Let Peace Be Your Guide: When navigating difficult decisions, especially good-versus-best choices, let the peace of Christ rule in your heart. That peace surpasses understanding precisely because it is not always explained by natural reasoning.
-
Give Thanks Like the Freed: You have been rescued from cruel bondage and brought into the Kingdom of God, with a full inheritance. Live with the gratitude and forward-facing joy of someone who knows they were set free.
-
Stop Going Back: Dabbling in darkness — in sin, fear, or the patterns of the old kingdom — is living as if the rescue never happened. Repent, turn, and start living from the rescue. You have been rescued for a reason.
Conclusion
If you are ready to understand the full weight of what God has done in bringing you out of darkness and into His kingdom — and how to live from that transfer every day — this message is for you.
