What if the biggest obstacle to hearing God isn't a lack of faith, but the filters we've built around our hearts? Every wound, every disappointment, every distortion of love quietly shapes how we hear Him. This message peels back those layers and reveals the voice beneath them all: the voice of love.
The Context
This is Part 6 of the "Hearing the Voice of God" series at Elite Life Church, anchored in John 10:27, "My sheep hear my voice." Pastor Tim Howe shares a fresh revelation from his recent visit to the Bible Museum in Washington, D.C., where he was struck by how relentlessly God has worked across generations to communicate one central message to humanity: He loves us.
The Core Message
At the heart of hearing God is knowing the love of God. The adversary's strategy has always been to twist and pervert love, planting filters from past hurts, relationships, and culture that distort the Father's voice. When we don't know how loved we are, we struggle to recognize His voice and we struggle to love others well. Jesus said the two greatest commandments hang together: love God, and love your neighbor as yourself. You can't give what you haven't received, and a revelation of God's love is the seed from which everything else in the Christian life grows.
Paul prayed in Ephesians 3 that believers would be rooted and grounded in love, with strength to comprehend a love that surpasses knowledge. This isn't head knowledge, it's experiential. God knows your love language better than anyone, and He speaks to you through the things that matter to you, even if they don't matter to anyone else. Whether it's pocket knives, sunsets, songs, or small kindnesses, the Father tailors His voice to your heart because He knows you intimately and is constantly working to remind you that you are deeply loved.
The Application
- Identify Your Filters: Recognize the past hurts, lies, and distortions that have shaped how you receive love. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you the scar tissue around your heart so He can heal it.
- Root Yourself in Love: Stop trying to earn God's approval through performance. You are loved because He created you to be loved, not because of what you do.
- Notice the Personal Touches: Pay attention to the things that matter to you. God speaks through your unique love language, often through small, meaningful objects, moments, and reminders.
- Build a Tangible Reminder: Keep a physical anchor of God's faithfulness, a box, a journal, a keepsake, anything you can return to when you need to remember His promises and goodness.
- Let Love Overflow: Receive His love first, then let it spill outward. Loving your neighbor flows naturally from knowing how loved you already are.
- Pursue Unity Over Division: In a culture of backbiting and division, walking in love with other believers is the greatest testimony the church can offer the world.
