The love of God is bigger than the universe itself — vast beyond comprehension, yet personal enough to anchor your entire identity. As lawlessness rises and the love of many grows cold, where you sink your roots will determine whether you stand or fall. This Part 2 message of the Your REAL ID series reveals four identity truths that hold believers steady in any storm.
The Context
Paul prays in Ephesians 3 that the church would have strength to comprehend the breadth, length, height, and depth of the love of Christ — a love so vast that it surpasses knowledge, yet so near it can be personally known. The central phrase of that prayer, "rooted and grounded in love," defines the believer's spiritual foundation. Against the backdrop of Matthew 24, where Jesus warns that lawlessness will rise and the love of many will grow cold, the call to be deeply rooted has never been more urgent.
The Core Message
Pastor Tim Howe unpacks the Greek word for love used in Ephesians 3 — agape — the selfless, sacrificial, unconditional love that is not based on emotion or feeling, but is an act of the will. To be rooted in this love means to be firmly planted like a tree drawing nourishment up through deep roots, while to be grounded means to rest on an unshakable foundation. Together, those images describe a believer whose spiritual life is both supplied and stabilized by the love of God. Just as the universe stretches billions of light years beyond what anyone can comprehend, the love of Christ surpasses knowledge — but it can still be known intimately and personally by every born again believer.
From there, the teaching draws out four identity-defining truths straight from Scripture: I am rooted and grounded in love (Ephesians 3:17), I am rooted in Christ (Colossians 2:7), I am complete in Christ (Colossians 2:10), and I am loved by God as His beloved (1 John 4:11). These are not feelings to chase or accomplishments to earn — they are realities for everyone who has put their faith in Jesus. When the prevailing winds of lawlessness, fear, and worldly philosophy threaten to cool the love of many, believers who stay rooted in these truths continue to bear fruit, weather every storm, and proclaim the gospel boldly as a testimony to all nations.
The Application
- Sink Your Roots: Spend daily time in the Word of God so your spiritual roots grow deep into His love, drawing constant nourishment from the source of life rather than from the world around you.
- Guard Your Heart: Limit how much of the world's chaos, negativity, and outrage you consume, because constantly focusing on lawlessness is what causes the love of many to grow cold.
- Reject Empty Philosophy: Watch out for self-help systems and worldly wisdom that borrow biblical principles but strip Christ out of them, because anything not rooted in Him will eventually fail.
- Take Thoughts Captive: Use the Word of God as a weapon to tear down lies about your identity, because the truth — not just hearing it but walking in it — is what sets you free.
- Rest In Completeness: Stop striving to prove your worth, because in Christ your spirit man is already made complete and you are already deeply loved by God as His beloved.
- Overflow With Gratitude: Let thanksgiving be the natural overflow of a life that knows it is loved, rooted, and complete, even when outward circumstances are challenging.
