Christ was rich, yet for your sake He became poor — so that through His poverty you might become rich. That single verse rewrites how every believer relates to money, generosity, and the kingdom of God. Part 19 of the Your REAL ID series unpacks what it really means to be rich in Christ.

The Context

When Jesus stepped into His public ministry, His very first sermon opened with the words of Isaiah 61: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to proclaim good news to the poor." The Sermon on the Mount echoed it again — "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." 2 Corinthians 8:9 then unfolds the staggering exchange behind that good news: "Though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you by His poverty might become rich." From that verse, a new Real ID truth emerges: I am rich.

The Core Message

The teaching opens by clarifying what "rich" actually means in the kingdom of God. Being poor in spirit is a posture of humility — recognizing dependence on God and a need for a Savior — and to that humble person, Scripture promises the entire kingdom of heaven. Jesus' good news to the poor isn't a guarantee of financial wealth; it's the offer of kingdom citizenship and everything that comes with it. From the Sermon on the Mount, Pastor Tim Howe walks through Jesus' teaching on treasure — lay up treasures in heaven, not on earth, because where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Jesus then says "the eye is the lamp of the body," language a Jewish audience instantly recognized: a "good eye" meant generosity, a "bad eye" meant stinginess. The eye reveals the heart. A heart that trusts the kingdom is naturally generous; a heart that doesn't grips tightly to what it has.

From there, the message dives into 2 Corinthians 8 and the Macedonian believers — people in severe poverty whose joy overflowed in extreme generosity. Paul calls giving an "act of grace" and points to the Lord Jesus Himself as the supreme example. The Real ID truth — I am rich — isn't permission for greed or self-indulgence; it is the foundation for living generously and confidently. Sowing and reaping are spiritual laws of the kingdom: whoever sows sparingly reaps sparingly, whoever sows bountifully reaps bountifully. God's promise in 2 Corinthians 9 is that He will "make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work." That is the biblical definition of rich — having enough, at all times, to be generous in every situation. A personal testimony underscores the journey: in earlier years, $20 felt enormous to give at church and small at the store, but as faith grew and giving grew with it, so did the Lord's blessing on the work of his hands.

The Application

  • Be Poor In Spirit: Walk in humble dependence on God, recognizing your need for the Savior — that posture unlocks every benefit of the kingdom.
  • Check Your Eye: Examine whether you tend toward generosity (a good eye) or stinginess (a bad eye), because the eye reveals the true condition of the heart.
  • Lay Up Treasure Above: Stop storing up treasures on earth where moth and rust destroy, and invest where the return is eternal — in the kingdom of God.
  • Receive The Exchange: Embrace the truth of 2 Corinthians 8:9 as your identity in Christ — through His poverty you have been made rich, regardless of your current bank account.
  • Sow Bountifully: Don't wait until the bills are paid or the debt is gone to start being generous — sow first, in faith, and watch God multiply what is left.
  • Renew The Soul: Let the spiritual truth "I am rich" sink into your soul realm — your thinking, willing, and feeling — until it shapes how you actually handle money in everyday life.
