What's the verdict when you stand before God? Many believers carry the weight of guilt and shame, convinced their failures define them — but Scripture says otherwise. Part 9 of the Your REAL ID series uncovers two powerful identity truths: you are guiltless in Christ, and you are seated with Him in heavenly places.
The Context
The Corinthian church had some of the most public, severe sin issues of any congregation in the New Testament — divisions, sexual immorality, lawsuits between believers, abuse of the Lord's Supper, misuse of spiritual gifts, even denial of the resurrection. Yet Paul opens his letter not by blasting them, but by calling them "sanctified in Christ Jesus" and reminding them that Christ "will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ." This message draws out the Real ID truths embedded in that opening: I am guiltless in Christ, and I am seated with Christ in heavenly places.
The Core Message
Pastor Tim Howe opens with a deeply personal testimony of growing up in a church that tried to scare him out of sin by piling on guilt and shame. The strategy backfired — the more he focused on his sin, the more sin had power in his life, until he eventually gave up trying altogether. The turning point came when he discovered Romans 2:4 — it is the goodness of God that leads to repentance, not condemnation. Scripture makes a critical distinction between guilt, which says "I did something bad," and shame, which says "I am bad." Guilt is a useful momentary signal that drives a believer to repent; shame is an identity the enemy uses to keep believers bound, sleepless, and convinced God could never use them. Hope, however, does not put us to shame, and the accuser of the brethren has already been thrown down.
From there, the teaching moves to Hebrews 12:1-2 with a fresh twist: most believers try to lay aside the sin first, hoping that if they can stop sinning, the guilt and shame will follow. Scripture actually flips that order — lay aside every weight first, then the sin. When believers stop carrying guilt and shame as identity and instead anchor themselves in their righteousness in Christ, the desire for sin begins falling away on its own. Every sin past, present, and future was a future sin from the cross's perspective, fully dealt with by Jesus when He "made purification of sins" and sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. Ephesians 2:6 then reveals the staggering parallel — believers are seated with Him in that very place of victory and spiritual authority. Sin has no power over a believer not because of good works, but because of Jesus.
The Application
- Reject Shame: Refuse to carry shame as an identity, because Scripture says hope in Christ does not put anyone to shame and the accuser has already been cast down.
- Repent Quickly: When you sin, don't pile on guilt — let it drive you to a quick "that's not me, Lord," then immediately fix your eyes back on Jesus.
- Lay Down The Weight: Stop trying to lay aside sin first; lay down the weight of guilt and condemnation first, and watch the sin lose its grip on you.
- See Yourself Guiltless: Receive 1 Corinthians 1:8 as your actual standing — you are guiltless in Christ, sustained to the end by His faithfulness and not your performance.
- Live From Above: Remember that Ephesians 2:6 has already seated you with Christ in heavenly places, in a position of victory and spiritual authority over every struggle.
- Eyes On Jesus: When you find yourself looking at your flesh and feeling defeated, immediately lift your gaze to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of your faith.
