Have you ever been discouraged or depressed? Beaten down by anxious thoughts or fears of what the future holds? Scripture says everyone born of God overcomes the world. Tune in to Part 12 of the Your REAL ID series to learn how to take up the shield of faith and walk as the overcomer you already are in Christ.
The Context
Ephesians 6 commands believers to take up the shield of faith with which they can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one. This teaching connects that command to 1 John 5:4 — "this is the victory that has overcome the world: our faith" — and introduces a new Real ID truth that builds on every truth before it: I am an overcomer of the world by faith. The enemy comes with lies disguised as our own thoughts, but a believer standing in faith on the Word of God is undefeatable.
The Core Message
The teaching opens with a deeply personal testimony. After Pastors Tim and Meagan Howe and their family moved across the country to plant Elite Life Church in Waukegan, Illinois, the enemy launched a major assault on Tim's thoughts. The spiritual oppression of the city pressed in — depression, addiction, broken families, poverty — and the lies began consuming his mind, until he spent weeks discouraged and laying in bed. The turning point came not from a feeling, but from a choice: Meagan kept speaking life and truth, the kids prayed, and eventually the whole family walked their property declaring the Word of God aloud and taking spiritual authority over their home. That is what taking up the shield of faith actually looks like in real life — and it works, because Scripture is true.
From there, the message walks through a powerful three-step framework for how faith operates. It starts with a promise — anything God has said in His Word about you, your situation, or your future. Hope grabs hold of that promise and acts like a kedge anchor cast out ahead of a stuck vessel, pulling you forward toward the fulfillment. Then faith sees the promise as already done, the substance of things hoped for, the picture you know to be your true reality even before your natural eyes can see it. Joshua at Jericho saw a fortified city as already given to him before a single wall fell. Abraham, against every natural reason for hope, grew strong in faith and gave glory to God, fully convinced God was able to do what He had promised. And because faith works through love, knowing how deeply the Father loves you is what allows perfect love to cast out fear and faith to paint the right picture of your future.
The Application
- Take Up Faith: Grab the shield of faith and extinguish every flaming dart of the enemy before it ignites a wildfire of fear, anxiety, or toxic thinking in your mind.
- Cast Your Cares: Stop trying to handle anxious thoughts on your own — humble yourself, cast every care on the Lord, and let Him exalt you at the proper time.
- Believe His Love: Choose to receive how deeply God loves you, because perfect love casts out fear and faith only works through love.
- Anchor To His Word: When you're stuck in the storm, find a specific promise in Scripture and anchor your hope to it like a kedge anchor pulling your vessel forward.
- See It As Done: Hold the picture God has given you in His Word as your true present reality, even when the natural circumstances say otherwise.
- Declare Truth Aloud: Use your mouth to speak the amen to God's promises and break agreement with every lie the enemy is trying to plant in your thinking.
